I have often been asked to recommend songs to listen to and it gives me great pleasure when my favourite songs become my friends’ favourites as well. At the end of each year, there are numerous countdowns worldwide which rank the Top 100 songs in each music industry. Most of these rankings rely on votes, and sometimes, they end up failing to accurately reflect the true quality of some gems of songs.

Here are my picks for the category of top underrated Tamil film tunes of 2015. If you have not heard any of these, do give them a listen! As a melody lover, I must first admit that most of the songs that made this list are slow and romantic numbers. They are not ranked in any particular order.

(1) தேனே தேனே செந்தேனே

Film: நண்பன் டா

Singers: Haricharan, Pravin Saivi

Homegrown artiste Pravin Saivi of international fame has sung this beautiful melodic song. Pravin’s success on Vijay Tv’s “Airtel Super Singer 3” and “Super Singer T20” is something all Singaporeans can certainly be proud of! All the best to him on his future endeavours!

(2) கண்ணாலம் கண்ணாலம்

Film: இஞ்சி இடுப்பழகி

Singers: Damini, Palak Muchchal & Mohana Bhogaraju

Following the trend of upbeat and colourful wedding songs, this one is a lovely, preppy number which did not garner as much attention as it deserves. If you love classic wedding songs like யாரோ யாரோடி from “அலை பாயுதே” and இடிச்ச பச்சரிசி from “உத்தம புத்திரன்”, you must listen to this!

(3) காதலே காதலே

Film: இன்று நேற்று நாளை

Singers: Shankar Mahadevan & Padmalatha

Shankar Mahadevan – need I say more? His bold and powerful voice will leave you wanting to play this song again and again.

(4) இரவாக நீ

Film: இது என்ன மாயம்

Singers: G. V. Prakash Kumar & Saindhavi

This duo of singers has not failed to exude a magic touch in every duet they have sung. Listen to this song on a rainy night. *sigh*

(5) அலுங்குறேன் குலுங்குறேன்

Film: சண்டி வீரன்

Singers: Namitha Babu & Prasanna Rao

This one is a peppy and romantic folk number that will make you want to get up and dance with your loved ones. Also, it doesn’t hurt that Adharvaa is oh so handsome in the music video!

(6) என்னாச்சு ஏதாச்சு

Film: த்ரிஷா இல்லேனா நயன்தாரா

Singers: G.V. Prakash Kumar, Saindhavi & Kalyani Pradeep

You might be shocked to find a song from the above stated movie on this list, but rest assured, this song is vastly different from its ill reputed cousin which I shall not deign to name. Again, this song is from G.V. Prakash and his wife and I must admit that I host a soft spot for this pair. Kabilan’s lyrics will make you consider falling in love. (if you aren’t already!)

(7) என்னை மாற்றும் காதலே

Film: நானும் ரௌடி தான்

Singers: Sid Sriram & Anirudh Ravichander

So much of FEELS in this one! Sid Sriram is one of my favourite singers and this song is undoubtedly awesome. I’ll leave the music to do the rest of the talking.

(8) ஆனாலும் இந்த மயக்கம்

Film: 10 என்றதுக்குள்ள

Singer: Sathya Prakash

The second runner-up in Vijay TV’s “Super Singer 3”, Sathya Prakash is an upcoming playback singer with a pleasant melodic vocals. The combination of D. Imman’s unique music composition and Sathya’s voice will make your heart flutter to the beat of this lovey-dovey song.

(9) பச்சை வண்ண

Film: வை ராஜா வை

Singer: Yuvan Shankar Raja

Green seems to be the favourite colour of many poets and Madhan Karky has weaved yet another enchanting song associated with the colour in this movie starring Gautham Karthik and Priya Anand.

(10) நானே வருகிறேன்

Film: O.K. கண்மணி

Singers: Shashaa Tirupati & Sathya Prakash

How can any Kollywood song list not include a song by the Mozart of Madras? Although the hip and breezy song, Mental மனதில், had everyone raving, this soul moving number was my first love in this album. A.R. Rahman’s classical twist makes one fall hopelessly in love with this song!

Happy New Year, everyone! May 2016 have the best of everything in store for you!
